Spring is coming sooner than you think. Before you know it, it will be time to fling open the windows and let the sunshine in. This may make you feel like getting rid of clutter and giving your home a good cleaning to shake off the hibernation of winter. If you need a little push to get you going, here are 5 ways to get a jumpstart on your spring cleaning.
How to Get Started on your Spring Cleaning
- Set Goals & Make a Plan
Create a list to figure out what you really want to accomplish. Find some quiet time and make a list of all of the areas that need to be re-organized. Don’t edit your list; just keep going until you get everything down. You may want to walk around the house and look at different areas. What rooms feel cluttered? What areas have been overlooked in cleaning? After you make your list, prioritize the spaces. Number them based on what you want to do first.
Then schedule time to clean. Be realistic, you won’t get it all done in one day or even two. Spring cleaning can take some time. Maybe plan on one area every day or every weekend, depending on your schedule. Schedule the first three areas and stick to it. Once you get started, you’ll feel so good that you’ll want to keep going.
Be prepared to start decluttering. Label four baskets or bags as:
- Put away somewhere else
This will help you get through the clutter faster.
- Less is More
It’s time to let go of the guilt you may for getting rid of things you no longer want or need and only keep the things that bring you joy. If you don’t use something and only hold on to it because it was a gift, it’s time to let it go and free that space for something you really like. Sort through the stuff you’re purging and pass along to friends who might be able to use it or donate it.
- Start with a Small Space
To avoid feeling overwhelmed and create a feeling of success start with just one small space that you can easily tackle in an hour or two. Maybe it’s organizing your bathroom drawers or the kitchen junk drawer. Pick one small space and go for it. You’ll feel much better when you see progress and realize that it’s not as overwhelming as you thought it would be.
- Take Before & After Photos
Taking photos will help you see the progress you’re making and motivate you to keep going. You may think you’ll remember what a space looked like before, but you’ll never remember every detail of the small nooks and crannies. Compare your before and after photos to easily track your success.
Organizing is hard work. It’s exhausting and it usually gets worse before it gets better. But when it’s done, you’ll feel a huge weight lifted off your shoulders and you’ll be proud of what you accomplished. Celebrate your progress along the way, with each item you mark off your list.
I hope this helps you get a little excited about clearing your home for spring and moving into the new season with a fresh start.
