I really, really dislike working out. Yep I said it. I really do and always have. I’m nearly 37 years old and my whole life I’ve avoided exercise in any way that I could. I know it’s contributed to my struggles with weight, but for me it was easier to eat well to keep healthy than to add exercise in too.
It was always confused at people who actually DID enjoy their daily exercise. Whatever it was… running, going to the gym, tennis, walking… they’d found something that worked for them and that they enjoyed enough to actually get out and do it each day. At 36 years old, I still hadn’t found it and had pretty much given into the belief that it just wasn’t for me.
Trying Core in Action Outdoor Fitness for the First Time
In the past year, I’ve worked hard to lose over 50 lbs by eating clean. All of the sudden, movement began to feel easier and not as painful as it had when I was heavier. I’d heard about a local “bootcamp” called Core in Action Outdoor Fitness taught by one of my good friends, Danielle Lien. My sister even attended the classes as well as other friends. They all encouraged me to come try it… after all, the first class is always free so what harm could it do, but I admit the word “bootcamp” scared me!
I went to my first class last March. I showed up at 6am, in the dark, and questioned why I was even there. This wasn’t going to be pretty and truthfully, I’d rather by sleeping. I looked around and noticed such a refreshing variety of women. The class was only made up of about 6 women. Some were older, some younger, some were overweight, some were fit, some were single, some were moms, some were grandmothers. Everyone was there for themselves, no matter what their level of fitness was was.
That day’s class focused on Tabata intervals and I remember thinking that while this was hard, it actually wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be! I felt my body working, but I wasn’t pushed beyond my abilities. Danielle suggested many variations of difficulty for me and others like me who couldn’t do the exact movement just yet. No one has ever done that for me in other classes. I always felt like I couldn’t keep up because I couldn’t actually do the full movement expected of me. This was such a refreshing new way to workout at a level that was appropriate for ME!
45 minutes later, I completed the workout! I felt like I’d worked hard, but not to the point of exhausting myself so much that I never wanted to come back. I had actually enjoyed myself and found myself wanting to come back for the next class!
Since then, I’ve attended classes every week and have worked up to going 3 times a week now. I take both Tabata and TRX classes and enjoy them all. Every single week we work on a different part of our body and every single week I still feel sore. That’s so unique and I love knowing that we are working our entire bodies. Danielle is still so kind and helps with modifications, and the other women are so fun to be around. No one feels pressure and we all do our workout at our own skill level. And best of all, I never get bored because the variety is different constantly!
