I’m sure you’ve heard about them. Maybe your friends have talked about them. Maybe you’ve heard about them at the spa while you’ve treated yourself to a massage or facial. Maybe you think they’re just another fad. But have you actually tried essential oils yet?
I admit… I was very skeptical when I first heard about them. I’m in my 30’s… I grew up in the 1980’s & 90’s where we took medicine for every little pain or fever. We went to the doctor for every little cough or cold. We ate lots of convenience foods. We didn’t hesitate to cover our family’s home in chemicals from cleaners and detergents. It’s what we all did, so how could it be bad?
Why I Choose to Use Essential Oils
Over the past couple of years, I’ve opened my eyes to how this “normal” American way of life may not actually be what’s best for me. My grandparents didn’t live this way, nor did the generations before them. They made their foods, cleaners and even some medicines from scratch. Life was simpler, they were happier and they were healthier. I’ve worked on striving for a healthier lifestyle for me and my family the past couple of years. We’ve started making better food choices by growing and making foods from scratch at home. I was intrigued when I heard about how essential oils can be used to help your body heal itself from colds, flus, headaches, muscle pain, ear aches, sinus infections and so much more. I also loved the concept of using essential oils to make homemade cleaners for my home that both smelled amazing and were safe for my family.
How to Use Essential Oils Every Day
I started with an oil section called Family Physician Kit to get a nice variety of everyday oils that I could use for a varieties of everyday purposes. This kit contains 5 ml bottles of Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint, Melaleuca, Oregano, Frankincense, Deep Blue, Breathe, DigestZen, and On Guard to help families address a multitude of health issues. I really loved this kit, but the 5 ml bottles were used up quite quickly! I do wish I had started with larger 15 ml bottles that come in the Home Essentials Kit instead. Since then, I’ve also added Slim & Sassy (Metabolic Blend), In Tune (Focus Blend), Serenity (Calming Blend), Purify (Cleaning Blend), Wild Orange and Cypress to my collection.
I highly recommend the book Modern Essentials: a Contemporary Guide to the Therapeutic Use of Essential Oilsto help you know how to use essential oils for whatever ailment or need you might have. Simply look up your symptom or need in the book and it will list all the oils that you can try to help your body work to alleviate the symptom. I use this book everyday!
Each day, I start my day with 1 drop of either Frankincense or Melaleuca added to my facial moisturizer to help keep my skin clear. This has worked SO well! I rarely have any breakouts now, even during those certain times of the month! I also put coconut oil, Lavender and Cypress on some painful varicose veins that I have on my legs. While this hasn’t reduced the look of them, it does help dramatically with the achiness I used to feel from these each day.
At breakfast, I add 3 drops of lemon to my Lifefactory 22 oz Glass Water Bottle. It’s important to only use glass bottles when you add essential oils since they can begin to deteriorate plastics and you certainly don’t want to be consuming that! I also take 5 drops of Slim & Sassy Metabolic Blend in a Veggie Capsule to boost my metabolism for the morning. Amazingly, I feel less hungry between meals and feel much more focused and alert. Each time I refill my water bottle, I add more lemon. It’s taste so refreshing. My husband has always added artificially flavored powders to his water because he couldn’t stand the taste of plain water. He recently switched to lemon essential oil and actually loves it!
Before my kids go to school, they put In Tune on the soles of the feet to help with focus during the day. They often have sensitive tummies too so a little DigestZen rubbed on their abdomens before school usually does the trick!
Throughout the day, I like use my petal diffuser to fill the air with either Elevation blend (uplifts your moods) or Lemon & Peppermint to help with focus. Sometimes I will also use In Tune on the back of my neck to help with focus. I also continue to put lemon in my water and take one or two more capsules of Slim & Sassy.
In the evening, my kids put some Serenity or Lavender on their pillows and the back of the neck to relax them and help them fall asleep quickly. It works wonders for my daughter that used to deal with insomnia often. They also use OnGuard on the soles of their feel to help fight off any bugs picked up during the day at school. My husband uses a mixture of Coconut Oil, Melaluca, Cedarwood, Lavender, Rosemary, Oregano, Peppermint, and Eucalyptus oil to help relieve some severe seborrheic dermatitis that he has. I also diffuse Serenity at night while we sleep to help us sleep better and enjoy Breathe to help with allergy stuffiness at night.
I also use oils around the house in my cleaners and detergents. So far, I’ve made homemade dishwasher detergent tabs with Wild Orange Oil and All-Purpose Cleaner with Lemon. I also add Purify to our laundry to give it a wonderful clean scent and to kill off nasty germs! I have plans to make many more household items so stay tuned!
