Last year was a big deal for me. I finally learned how to change the way I eat into a lifestyle and actually lost weight, okay a lot of weight! I’m 37 years old and for the first time in my life I took my health seriously. Maybe it was the realization that life can be gone all too quickly and we have to live in the present moment. Maybe it was that I was so tired of feeling trapped in my body, unable to enjoy life like I should. Maybe it was the fact that 40 was coming quick and my body just doesn’t work like it used to. Maybe it was all of it!
I jumped in full throttle and did the work it took. Through a lot of research and some help from a nutritionist, I learned how to eat again and how to eat to make my body metabolize like it was designed to do. You all followed my weight loss journey here and I appreciated your encouragement so much! The foods I had eaten my whole life, even though they were often considered “healthy”, were in reality causing my body to store fat and gain weight. I learned what sugar actually does to my body. Even “healthy” real foods like whole grains, brown rice, potatoes and homemade breads were turning into more sugars in my body than it could metabolize, which told my liver to start making fat. How Real Food has Transformed Me
After over 7 months of work, I did it. I lost 50 lbs! Seeing that number finally was such an amazing accomplishment. I felt energy like I hadn’t felt in so long. I felt confident again. I felt motivated again. I felt attractive again. I felt like me again! Eating healthy real food had become a new lifestyle. I drastically brought down inflammation in my body too and have greatly reduced my joint paint, plantar fasciitis in my feet, migraines and the overall mental fogginess that I would feel every day. It’s been an amazing journey to a new lifestyle where I’ve learned the dangers of sugar on your body, and have learned how important proteins and fresh vegetables are for you to have every single day.
My Recent Set Back
The honest truth, however, is that it hasn’t been easy since then. I went on vacation to Europe last Spring and enjoyed myself so much (as anyone should on vacation!). But after coming home, I didn’t do a very good job of getting back on track. I’ve slowly allowed some foods back in that I know work against me. I stopped following my meals plans strictly and have indulged a bit too often again. Some of my weight has slowly kept back on over the last 6 months. The tiredness is back. The lack of motivation is back. And I definitely feel like I’m slipping back to my old lifestyle.
But as frustrating it is to see some weight come back, it’s been a really great learning experience for me. I can’t eat perfectly every day, no one can. You WILL burn out. I actually did eat perfect, without any cheating, for months straight, and do you know what? I ended up resenting the nutritious food I ate. I couldn’t figure out what to eat anymore because I stopped enjoying food. But what I’ve learned in the past few months is that I need to strive to eat really well, most days. Once in a while, I need to allow myself to enjoy some extra foods I love. The key is to do it only once in awhile. It can’t be daily. Daily is what stops my progress. Enjoying something special once in awhile will keep away the feelings that you’re denying yourself.
