It’s almost that time of the year again. Around this time, a lot of households are doing their annual spring cleaning routine. Though most people do simple tasks, you can use this time to do some needed home checkups and deep cleaning. That means looking at parts of your home that have been neglected for quite a while. Now is a good time to do them because of the nice weather. To get you started, here are some things you should consider doing.

Home Maintenance

As a homeowner, you have a ton of responsibility to ensure that your home is livable. Unlike other chores, these don’t need your attention that often, but it is important to get them done every year. If you haven’t gotten around to doing any of them, now is the perfect time to do it when the weather is right, and you’re in a cleaning mood.

One of the first things you should do is check if you need to replace any filters. These apply to HVAC systems, dishwashers, vents, and refrigerators. Inspect your water heaters and tanks to see if they are functioning properly.

Since winter just finished, you will also need to look out for damages done by snow and water. Check whether drains and gutters need cleaning out as it tends to get clogged because of the weather. Depending on your findings, repairs for your roof and exterior might be needed because of the snow’s moisture.

Decluttering

Studies found that one in four Americans have a clutter problem. Many people don’t realize it, but most people tend to accumulate items that they do not really need. Sometimes, we do not realize that we already have so much stuff in our home. Though you may not be actively buying many items, you may also be keeping items from years ago that you do not have any use for now.

If you are going to do some spring cleaning, then it is best to start removing some clutter while you are at it. When you get the time, sort out the items that are just taking up space. You can also choose to keep items with sentimental value, but be careful when doing this because you might not get rid of anything. Anything that adds value to your life or makes you happy can be kept. Items that are beyond use and require major repairs may need to be thrown out.

Decluttering can be greatly relaxing, and having a clean home can actually be good for your mental health. You will find that it makes your home more spacious.

Cleaning Surfaces

A lot of homeowners tend to forget that windows and screens need cleaning, too. You will find that it does wonders when improving the light inside your home. Aside from that, years of neglect can also cause it to accumulate a lot of dust that makes it foggy or discolored. Instead of replacing them entirely, some deep cleaning will do just the trick.

Make sure that you also clean other surfaces in your home, such as counters and tables. Disinfecting them is important, especially if they are surfaces that are near cooking areas. In some cases, you may need to add some polishing to help get them back to their original state.

Don’t forget to clean out old shelves as well. Dust them thoroughly to get rid of any cobs and other things that might have made their way into the corners. This is also important because sometimes bugs leave their waste and dirt in places we least expect them to.

Washing Furniture

Are your couch pillows starting to smell? This is the time for you to start washing all those furniture and draperies that we tend to overlook. These items can be quite harmful to you and your family when left unchecked. For one, curtains and drapes can have allergens and dust to them. This will make life a nightmare for those that have allergies and such.

Not all curtains cannot be washed in a washing machine. Those with rings will get damaged, and certain fabrics might get ruined in the process. With things like couches and chairs, you have to make a cleaning solution that you will spray on them.

Spring cleaning is when people usually go out of their way to tidy up, but you don’t necessarily have to do it at this time. It can be done any time of the year, and in fact, the more you do it, the better the results.
